Water Activities

Deep Sea Fishing

Sri Lanka offers some amazing locations for deep sea fishing. So get ready to cast a line and start a new adventure! Deep sea fishing is offered in the Western and Southern Coasts from November to April and the Eastern Coast from May to September. You can choose to fish from the beach itself or go further out to sea in an in-built or out-board fibre-glass motor boat and try troll fishing. All safety jackets, rods and bait, and other equipment will be supplied. Fishing tours can be arranged on a day basis or as part of a longer itinerary.

Diving/Snorkelling

Sri Lanka offers some of the best diving and snorkelling experiences. Hikkaduwa, Kirinda, Kalpitiya, Weligama and Trincomalee are amongst the famous. Hikkaduwa is recognised as one of the best places for snorkelling and diving and promises its visitors an unforgettable underwater experience!

Here you will find some of the most experienced and qualified instructors. At the end of your dive, you will also be awarded a certificate. There’s an abundance of tropical fish, some of the most colourful coral reefs and old shipwrecks to explore. In Hikkaduwa, November to April is the optimum time of the year to experience the magnificent underwater world, as the waters are at their calmest.

Kirinda on the South East Coast is best known as a base from which to experience some excellent diving at the famous ‘Great Basses’ wreck and the Great and Little Basses reefs. Trinco on the East Coast offers some of the beautiful beaches like Nilaveli and Uppuveli.

Dolphin and Whale Watching

Dolphin and Whale watching is a breath taking experience which is becoming a popular attraction in Sri Lanka. Dondara point located on the South Coast is an ideal location to watch Blue Whales, Sperm Whales and the Spinner Dolphins. They can be also spotted in the deep seas off the Southern Coastal towns of Kirinda, Mirissa and Galle. December to April is the best time to spot the whales. There is a very high chance of spotting Sperm Whales and Blue Whales during the peak months of December, January and April.

Kalpitiya on the North-West Coast is also ideal for spotting the Spinner Dolphins, Sting Rays and the endangered Marine Turtles. During November to March is the best time for watching Dolphins.

Surfing

Sri Lanka’s East and the South -West coasts are the ideal locations for surfing for all levels and interests. East Coast is best during May to October where as the South-West coast is best during December to March period.

Arugam Bay on the East Coast is very famous amongst the surfers. Arugam Bay holds an international surfing competition each year and is also recognised by the international surfing community.

Hikkaduwa is the best on the South-West Coast. If you are looking to escape the crowded areas of Arugam Bay, then why not explore the numerous small bays and beaches between Hikkaduwa and Mirissa that are popular for surfing?

Waterski

For those who prefer to remain above the water but still want to experience adrenalin pumping water activity, then we highly recommend water-skiing. Water-Skiing is available for beginners to advanced levels in Hikkaduwa and Negombo. For those starting off or this being your first ever water skiing experience, full training is offered both on dry land and in the water. The best time for waterskiing in Negombo is December to March.

White Water Rafting/Canoeing

Why not add some exhilaration and adventure to your holiday by white water rafting? These are designed for the beginners to the experienced with a wide range of grading and rapids.

For beginners the best location is Kitulgala on Kelani river and for the experienced, there’s a range of places like Mahaweli, Kalu and Kotmale rivers. The water rafting tours range from 1 hour for the beginners to 2 days for the experienced.

During the tours you will experience the beauty of Sri Lanka and its nature while you travel through the tea and rubber plantations and tranquil mountains covered in lush rainforest whilst being mesmerised by the calm chirps of the native birdlife. Those after a bit more action can take advantage of the turbulent waters as you gush through Sri Lanka’s jungle paradise and take on the unforgiving pounding waters.

Canoeing is another fun way to experience the beautiful nature Sri Lanka has to offer. You can start Canoeing from Bentota, Bo-Path Ella and Sinharaja Forest. The trip from Sinharaja Forest to Kalutara can be completed in one or two days. It is a relaxed and scenic route, recommended for beginners. Bentota lagoon is also a calm place to canoe in one or two person canoes. Small jungle river tours and riverbank camping are also offered on the Bo-Path Ella waterfalls to Kaluganaga trip.

Windsurfing

Bentota on the South-West Coast and Nilaveli on the East Coast are the ideal locations and considered a wind surfer’s paradise. For beginners Bentota is probably the best place during November to April, as the calm and tranquil waters are kind to those new to this experience. Club Intersport and Lanka Sportreizen provide a range of water sports in Bentota. On the east coast it’s best during May-October. Inland wind surfing can be done on Bolgoda Lake conducted by the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club. Regardless of where you choose to experience wind surfing in Sri Lanka, it will not disappoint!
