Hill Country

Nuwara Eliya

Hill Country also known as the Tea Country is where you will explore some of the splendor and tranquility Sri Lanka has to offer. It is also in vast contrast to Colombo, as the calm, scenic landscapes are also reflected by the local people’s unhurried and relaxed approach to everyday life. Hill Country’s cool climate throughout the year and the historical colonial architecture will take your breath away. You will also explore the gorgeous waterfalls that flow through the tea plantations adding extra beauty to this country town. There are a number of beautiful hotels and bungalows where you can revert back to the colonial era and sip cups of Sri Lanka’s best export – freshly brewed tea.

Driving to the Hill Country is also another highlight as you take in for miles the scenic tea plantations and visit tea factories where you are able to sample and purchase delicious tea. The roads are narrow and windy. Though it is only 180 km away from Colombo, the trip can take just above 4 hrs. Another option is to take a scenic train ride where you will explore the gorgeous tea plantations and the waterfalls from a closer distance.

Whilst in the Hill Country, we recommend that you take in some of the suggested experiences:

A round of golf at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

Night-time climb up the sacred Adam’s Peak

Stay in a tea planter’s bungalow

Stunning vistas – such as from Haputale to the South Coast on a clear day

Take a jeep ride around Horton Plains National Park

Take a train journey to the Southern Highlands

Walk through lush green tea plantations, mountainous landscapes and rural villages

Wind past misty mountain peaks and cascading waterfalls

Kandy

Kandy once was the capital of Sri Lanka and is recognised as a World Heritage Site. The well known historical and a religious tales of magnificence is still very much alive an apparent in Kandy. In fact Kandy was the last capital reigned by kings of Sri Lanka before being ruled by the British in 1815. Kandy lies about 500 m from the sea level and about 115 km from Colombo.

Kandy town centre is a busy city though you will find plenty of places to unwind by the parks and lakes. You can experience a gorgeous view in the evening by Lake Kandy when the sun sets. This town has some beautiful hotels for your comfort and relaxation. Kandy is regarded as a sacred city as it holds a tooth relic of Lord Buddha. This is kept securely in one of the most worshiped places in Sri Lanka, the Dalada Maligawa, a must visit while in Kandy.

During the month of August, Kandy dazzles with the sounds and lights of the Kandy Perehara – a magnificent procession where a sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha is majestically paraded on elephant back along the streets of Kandy.
