Colombo is the current commercial capital of Sri Lanka. The city’s history dates back to the 5th century during the East-West trade.

In 1815 the British who ruled Sri Lanka established Colombo as the Nation’s capital. Colombo remained as the administrative capital until 1980. This city is a fascinating place to visit. It is buzzing with traffic, many government and private offices, five star hotels and many heritage buildings from the colonial dates. Shopping is plentiful filled with street bazaars (where you can put your haggling skills to the test). The traffic can be an issue for a new traveller, however you will manage and understand the flow if you spend 2-3 days in Colombo.

Colombo has a population above 700000 and the city area spreads across 37sq km. Colombo is subdivided into 15 areas such as Colombo 1, Colombo 2,…. where Colombo 7 is probably the most expensive residentially.

There are many places to dine- in ranging from small restaurants to 5 star restaurants. In recent years Colombo has come alive with many pubs, casinos and night clubs.

The temperature in Colombo usually ranges between 27-30 degrees and gets a little cooler in the night time.

Whilst in Colombo we encourage you to experience if not all then some of the below memorable experiences:

Dinner at the Gallery Café

Exploring Pettah bazaar

Golf at Royal Colombo or Water’s Edge

Shopping at Paradise Road, Barefoot and Odels

Sipping sunset cocktails at Galle Face hotel
